Acid Alkaline Foods and Balancing pH

A pH balanced diet, according to many experts, is a major key to health maintenance as we age. If your goal is to achieve optimal health during your lifetime, maintaining a proper pH acid/alkaline balance via the foods you eat will definitely help you to find vitality on many levels. You will not only increase your ability to utilize the nutrients from your food and boost natural energies, but a more balanced body pH can also help alleviate aches and pains as well as heighten your mood considerably.

With regard to diet, the foods we eat play a substantial role in influencing body pH, ranging from more acidic, more alkaline or preferably somewhere in the middle. What determines whether a food is alkaline or acidic? The minerals that it is composed of determine the pH balance. Essentially, acid minerals are in acid foods and alkaline minerals are in alkaline foods.

The mineral elements that are acid-forming include: bromine, chlorine, copper, fluorine, iodine, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur.

The mineral elements that are alkaline-forming include: boron, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, potassium, sodium, and zinc.

What is the Optimal pH Balance?

A pH balance of around 7.4 is most optimal for the activity of the hormones, nerves and neurotransmitters. This more alkaline state allows excess stored acidic waste materials to be dissolved into liquid and excreted through the urine, sweat and feces. The body naturally tends to fluctuate between 6.4 to 7.4 depending on the time of day.

"The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause...too much tissue acid waste in the body!" Theodore A. Baroody, N.D., D.C., Ph.D.

How Too Many Acidic Foods Effect Our Health

For many people eating too many acid-forming foods on a regular basis can develop something called "acidosis." This condition can have dire consequences to our health, encouraging mineral deficiencies and fatigue. In addition, when the body is acidic our immune system suffers and we become more susceptible to inflammation, illness and diseases. High acid levels make us moody, upset, angry, reactive and irritated. These emotional energies and "acidity" can build up and over time cause mutated cells and cysts, digestive and metabolic problems, arthritic pain and inflammations.

All processed, refined and fast foods are acidic to the cells and chiefly composed of acid-forming minerals like phosphorus. Acidic foods usually always follow the "root, seed and muscle rule." This means that any foods that are roots, (like baked potatoes), seeds (like processed grains), and muscle (like meat) are foods that sway the blood over to the acidic side of the spectrum when ingested. The SAD diet is mainly composed of these three ingredients: meat, potatoes and bread.

Most always, if you have health problems or pain in the body there is acidity in the blood. Total healing of chronic illness only takes place when and if the blood is restored to a normal, slightly alkaline pH.

Why It's Important to Neutralize with Alkaline Forming Foods

An alkaline state makes us feel relaxed, calm, focused, clear, energetic and inspired. An alkaline-rich diet not only helps the body cleanse and detox acid waste build from acid-forming foods, but also helps increase our immune response to the variety of acid-promoting toxins in our every day environment.

The #1 alkaline forming foods are green chlorophyll-rich superfoods. These foods neutralize acidosis and are high in calcium, magnesium and other alkaline minerals. One of the reasons why "green smoothies" and "green juicing" has become so popular these days is because these drinks help to re-balance alkalinity by flushing the body in an easy to digest blended or juiced drink.

Green powdered superfoods are also packed with alkaline minerals that help to activate enzymes and allow the body to absorb more nutrients.

Top Alkaline-rich Superfoods

These are some of the most alkaline-forming foods you can eat, containing high amounts the mineral alkalizer's.

  • seaweeds
  • GREEN JUICES
  • leafy green vegetables
  • micro-algaes
  • medicinal mushrooms
  • non-acidic fruits and super fruits
  • sauerkraut
  • sprouts
  • green herbs
  • wild edible greens
  • aloe vera
  • bee pollen

Helpful TIPS that promote acid alkaline balance:

1) Eating green leafy salads before or after your meals is always a good idea. As they say, "A salad a day keeps acidosis away."

2) Follow the 80/20 rule whenever possible. This means that 80% of your meals should come from alkaline food based sources and 20% acid-forming. If this sounds extreme to you try at least moving in that direction to create more of a balance, which could mean 70/30 or 60/40. It definitely becomes easier overtime, although initially it might be challenging.

3) If you tend to eat smaller portions of food throughout the day, make one meal primarily alkaline (like a green juice) with the next being more acidic (like a protein drink or vegan nut burger).

4) Eat and chew your food slowly in a relaxed environment.

pH Testing Tape - 15 feet, By Peelu

Body Rescue pH Testing Tape is used to test the pH levels of the urine and saliva via a reactive color coded strip that allows you to compare where you are on the pH scale. Test saliva and/or urine in the morning. Test 2 hours after eating or drinking to observe impact on pH. Comes with a colored coded acid/alkaline chart to measure changes within the pH numbers ranging from 5.5 to 8.0.

Suggested use to test saliva: Place tape beneath tongue for three seconds. Remove. Compare to color chart. To test urine: dip tape in urine flow. Shake excess fluid off tape. Compare to color chart. ph Testing Tape
